Murakami magic at the Perrotin gallery

Inaugurated at the Perrotin Gallery on September 9 & 10, the exhibition”Learning the Magic of Painting” is the twelfth solo exhibition by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami since 1995 at the Perrotin Gallery, which presented it for the first time outside Japan.

On the programme of this event, now as unavoidable as its subject, more than 40 recent and never before exhibited works have been specially brought together for this occasion in the triptych that forms the gallery’s spaces. Some were unveiled at Takashi Murakami’s major exhibition”The 500 Arhats” at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo last year, such as”A Picture of Lives Wriggling in the Forest at the Deep End of the Universe” (2015), a monumental painting in several panels conceived as an anthology of the emblematic themes of Murakami’s cosmology.

Drawing on the irresistible graphic culture of manga and kawaii as well as the aesthetic demands of traditional Japanese art, Murakami, doctor of Nihonga painting, blurs the boundaries between great art and popular art.

This aesthetic journey is also an opportunity to discover the artist’s exploration of Zen Buddhism, with a selection from the Ens%u014D series and the”Arhats”.
