Lafayette Anticipations opens new Xinyi Cheng exhibition

Lafayette Anticipations, in the heart of the Marais, is opening the largest exhibition dedicated to the work of Xinyi Cheng in France, titled “Seen Through Others”. The Chinese-born artist, who has been living in Paris for five years in the Belleville district, tries to answer the most relevant question of today: what does it mean to be human? Some thirty works, which Cheng created between 2016 and 2021, are deployed throughout the building and are divided into three groups: on the first floor, a series illustrating different domestic and nocturnal situations, upstairs, the works that explore our metaphysical relationship, and under the glass roof on the top floor, the paintings featuring her poetic characters, both human and dog. The intensity of feelings, reveries and presences, but also the loneliness and melancholy that Xinyi Cheng reflects with overwhelming sensitivity make her one of the most emblematic artists of her generation, and perhaps this is why her softly colored works are often said to be unexpected tributes to the classics of Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec or Degas. The exhibition is a must-see at Lafayette Anticipations through May 28.
