BMW M850i x Jeff Koons : the art car

Is it a first? Not exactly. At BMW, art cars are actually a custom, and this model designed by Jeff Koons is the 20th of its kind! Warhol, Lichtenstein, Calder, or even Hockney have all been a part of the project since 1975. It all started with a French racer, Hervé Poulain, an art connoisseur and friend of the American painter Alexander Calder. While all the cars racing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans are covered with the labels of their sponsors, Poulain asked Calder to use his BMW 3.0 CSL as a canvas. The success was such that afterwards, the Munich-based firm decided to start regular collaborations with contemporary artists. Today, BMW has just entrusted Jeff Koons with his second car since the American artist had already taken over the M3 GT2 in 2010. All the ‘art cars’ are on display at the BMW Museum in Munich. If you are in the area, we strongly advise you to go visit the exhibition, which will surprisingly appeal to anyone – not just car lovers.
