Diana Markosian

Born in Moscow in 1989, Diana Markosian is an American artist of Armenian descent who works as a documentary photographer, writer, and filmmaker. At the age of seven, Markosian’s mother abruptly moved her family to California, leaving Markosian’s father behind in post-soviet Russia. This formative experience has become the central focus of Markosian’s artistic practice, as she seeks to reconcile her fractured family history through her work. Through her multi-faceted, interdisciplinary practice, Markosian delves into the universal complexities of family, displacement, and the pursuit of the « American Dream. » Her work stands as a poignant testament to the profound impact that a single decision can have on the trajectory of one’s life. Her projects blend documentary photography, staged reenactments, and archival materials to explore themes of memory, identity. Her deeply personal approach has earned her numerous accolades, including being selected as a nominee member of Magnum Photos in 2016 and receiving the prestigious Chris Hondros Emerging Photographer Award in 2015. At the crossroads of documentary, personal diary, and intimate journey, her poignant work Father earned her the Prix de la Photo Madame Figaro Arles 2025.
