French actor and director Gilles Lellouche was born in 1972 to a French-Algerian Jewish father and an Irish Catholic mother. He made his acting debut in the late 1990s, with small roles in films such as Les Sœurs Hamlet (1996) and Mes amis (1999). Lellouche’s career is deeply intertwined with that of acclaimed director Guillaume Canet, who propelled him to greater recognition with roles in Mon idole (2002) and Ne le dis à personne (2006). In turn, Lellouche directed Canet in his feature film debut, Narco, in 2004. Establishing himself as one of the most sought-after actors in French cinema, he appeared in an array of projects, from romantic comedies like Ma vie en l’air (2005) and On va s’aimer (2006) to gritty thrillers such as Krach (2010) and À bout portant (2010). In 2018, Lellouche made his directorial debut as a solo filmmaker with the acclaimed comedy-drama Le Grand Bain, which was nominated for several César Awards. In the following years, he continued to take on diverse roles, including a turn as the iconic character of Obelix in the 2023 film Astérix et Obélix: L’Empire du Milieu, directed by his longtime friend Canet. His latest film, Beating Hearts (2024), was a resounding success and has been nominated for no less than 14 different 2025 César awards.
